The first edition of this book appeared in 1921. Since the book deals with the application of Christianity to real life, the text, understandably had to be very radically revised and extended save where it concerned perennial problems. In accordance with the very extensive change in the nature of the situation which has occupied within the last few decades almost all the explanations of the "social question" have been replaced by new chapters.... Since the book first appeared political problems have acquired a new significance. They have become more and more a matter of world destiny; they have developed into such a threat to human life on this planet that treatment of them in the framework of a book that concerns the relationship of Christian truth to real life seemed unavoidable. The new chapter of sixty-four pages, "The Political Christ," contains everything that I had to say on the problem of "religion and politics.".... The chapter about the Jewish question, or, more plainly spoken, about the mutual relationship of Judaism and Christianity, may come as a surprise to the reader who is familiar with the first edition of this book. Renewed study of Jewish history has brought me the conviction that there is no greater defense for the truth of God incarnate than the marvellous story of the people who crucified their Messias, the Redeemer of the World. --- excepts from book's Introduction
