Motorists driving west on Central Avenue, just past Balmoral Street, will now see a large sign with the message, “Defend Life.” The full colour, 20 foot long by 10 foot high sign was erected by Knights of Columbus volunteers from Council 9295 on Monday.

“When we say, ‘Defend Life,’ we mean it in the broadest sense,” says the council’s Grand Knight Gilles Boisvert. “Of course we mean defend unborn babies, but also, defend marriage, and defend those who are abused — children, women, anybody — and defend spiritual life. Defend life in all ways.”

The sign was placed on a frame made from 6" by 6" wooden posts, driven 5 feet into the ground. Permission to erect the sign came from Bishop Fred Colli and the City of Thunder Bay. The sign sits on the corner of a large vacant lot, owned by the Diocese of Thunder Bay, beside the Catholic Pastoral Centre on Reaume Street.

The poster, which features Our Lady of Guadalupe blessing a mother and child, was supplied by the Supreme Council of the Knights, free of charge. Council 9295 paid for the rest of the costs associated with erecting the sign.

“The sign will be there indefinitely. We hope to change the poster on it every year,” Gilles says.

The council also erected a pro-life sign on the grounds of Corpus Christi Church on Red River Road last spring and hopes to erect one at St. Peter’s Church in the city’s East end.

“We’d like to have one at every Catholic church in the city, some day,” Gilles says.
