Book Review: Guide for End of Life Issues Lacks Depth

Now What: A Practical Guide to Dealing with Aging, Illness and Dying

Sheri Auger and Barbara Wickens

(Toronto, Novalis 2010)

by Fr. Allan Savage

This book lives up to its claims. It is a practical guide. Presented in clear and straight-forward language, the book initiates the reader into the complexities of end-of-life issues.

While I found the book comprehensive in introducing secular topics that would most likely trouble individuals facing end-of-life issues, either themselves or as a care giver, I found the author’s treatment of religious or spiritual issues lacking in depth.

Issues of spirituality, anointing of the sick, organ donation, types of service, cemeteries are all addressed in seven pages. This should not be surprising because the book, obviously written for our times, appears to be addressed to the uninitiated, both in end-of- life issues and subsequent religious tradition. Direction, guidance and support, are what the authors identify as their goals.

To my mind, the discerning, but non-practicing, Catholic will surely benefit by following-up on the author’s suggestions in chapter 10 of the book, “Final Passage.”

The book is available through the library at the Catholic Pastoral Centre, 1222 Reaume St., Thunder Bay (open weekdays, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) or through Novalis.
