(December 17/09) Volunteers from the Diocesan Office of Refugee Services (DOORS) assembled and delivered 36 food hampers to 36 refugee families yesterday afternoon. DOORS bought the food from Quality Market in Thunder Bay’s south side. At the store, volunteers loaded vehicles with food hampers and delivered them to refugee families. Some refugees helped with the work and three of the volunteer drivers used their own vehicles.
“Quality Market manager David Stezenko gives us the best bang for our buck on food purchases,” says Romano Taddeo, chairman of the DOORS board.
“This can be a tough time of year for refugees in Thunder Bay. Often, they work for minimum wage. And, of course, we are now in a recession,” he says.
DOORS conducts a food drive for refugees four times a year in partnership with Quality Market. In addition, the organization encourages parishes to sponsor refugees and helps newcomers with a wide variety of settlement issues once they arrive in Canada.
DOORS welcomes monetary donations. Please call (807) 343-9313.
